Liverpool-bound

I'm heading to Liverpool this weekend for a girly "City break" with friends.

Diagram of Mersey Tunnel - looks to be contemporary with its 1920s-30s construction! (Image source)

We're staying in a hotel which was described in a review as "Isambard Kingdom Brunel meets Carrie Bradshaw".  As one of us is a structural engineer, one of us is a surveyor and one of us is an architectural historian, and as we're fully intending to be drinking cocktails and being stylish as always, we decided that it was the perfect place for us!

But before then, and in honour of Remembrance Day, I thought I would share some details from the Cenotaph in Liverpool. (Image source can be found here)

  1. I'm struck by the individuality of the men in the first pic of the cenotaph! That is an excellent thing. Thank you for sharing this for Remembrance Day. We stumbled on a man preparing to play an old bugle which he'd restored, for a gathering of Greeks at the memorial for ex-prisoners-of-war, in Ballarat a couple of weekends ago.

  2. It sounds like a fun weekend that you were planning. I like the different but related interest areas you were all bringing to the trip. I look forward to your next blog! I hadn't realised there was a John Lennon airport in Liverpool until today!

  3. You're right - the different faces are wonderful. It gives them individuality, as you say, making it much more personal, rather than just a mass of nameless people, all with the same faces.

I hope you stayed around to hear the man play his bugle!

  4. He played us a short piece while I took a photo. I told him I thought he was going to continue but he said, being an old one, that it filled up with spit really quickly! We had a laugh about that.
