A Black Day

Despite the pleas of many, Clerkenwell Fire Station (which I have written about previously) will close tomorrow morning at 9.30, along with nine other stations around the capital: Belsize (Camden), Bow (Tower Hamlets), Downham (Lewisham), Kingsland (Hackney), Knightsbridge (Kensington & Chelsea), Silvertown (Newham), Southwark, Westminster and Woolwich (Greenwich).

A rally and vigil is taking place tomorrow morning at 8.30 at the various stations. I will be there at Clerkenwell to express my unhappiness and to pay my respects to the firemen and women who, over the past few years, have been the best neighbours I could have possibly hoped for. I will miss them greatly.

God bless you, men and women of Clerkenwell Fire Station.

Shame on you, Boris bloody Johnson.

  1. A very black day. Too many funerals. Too much sadness. Too much meanness, ignorance, narrowness…

  2. I've just followed your link to read about Jack Corbett in the Spitalfields Life article. I'm very glad I did.

  3. Oh how this pulls at the core of my history loving soul. Though not quite the same thing of course, it makes me think of a story I saw a few days ago on a US blogger's site about how huge volumes of local paperwork stretching back well into the 1800s were recently destroyed with the same disregard for their content as though they'd been junk mail flyers (thus destroying and losing a hefty amount of important local history for that area). In a world with absolutely no shortage of glaring new things, you'd think that more people would have the good sense to see the unending value in simply letting old items and buildings be.

    1. Utter madness! What on earth was their reasoning? I don't understand these people and their lack of sense either. Who isn't made happier by a sense of continuity and the richness of ages in the places and things around them?

    1. Thank you - for your thoughts and for the new year wishes. Perhaps these things have occurred at the opening of the year to help me realise not to take things for granted and to rally me into action to protect the things I love?

Happy new year to you, and may it be a fruitful and rewarding one in all your endeavours - I hope your photography continues to flourish x
